Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Genetics and EoE

Marc E. Rothenberg, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and  his staff revealed results of a study in the February 2006 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, which examined  genes  taken  from the esophagus of individuals with EoE as well as from people without the disease. To better understand the disease, Dr. Rothenberg  selected particiapants in his study to reflect as diverse a range of participants as possible with regard to age sex and disease state.

They study  discovered that  a "transcript signature" of genes (574) was different in those with EoE versus those who did not have the disease. In addition it appeared that this "transcript signature" was basically the same (some small differences for women) for everyone with the disease and was easily differentiated from the a sample taken from a patient with acid reflux disease.

This study and subsequent studies offering even deeper insight into the gentic profile of the disease will offer new methods of treating and diagnosing EoE.
